Beard Papa Sweets
#B2-07-9-1, Ngee Ann City
6238 8819

Best known for its cream puffs, Beard Papa definitely needs no introduction. If you have never heard of it, where have you been hiding??!

It's been ages since I had the Cream Puff ($2.20) since I'm not a fan of puff pastry or custard cream. The crispy puff filled with whipped custard cream was alright to me and certainly not good enough to tempt me into another bite.

The Azuki Bean Mochi ($2) was more to my liking. Although the skin was a tad too thick, it was soft and complemented the red bean ice cream nicely.

The range of mochi ice cream is a rather new addition to the other sweets found at Beard Papa. I wouldn't mind trying its other flavours when the craving for the Japanese rice cake hits me. A pity that there's no sesame mochi though!

Bengawan Solo
#B1-78/79, Parkway Parade
6345 6905

I picked up the Pandan Kaya cake ($18.80 for regular) before leaving since the family has been craving for it. It is perhaps the only cake I like from Bengawan Solo since I was a child. The combination of fragrant pandan, soft sponge cake and grated coconut is simply heady.

I can eat a slice for breakfast, another for tea break and not get tired of it!

Aroma
GF Intercontinental Hotel
6431 1058

Business at the deli seems to be doing well. The Chestnut Praline Dom ($7+) was the only cake left in the display case when we get there. I liked the chestnut cream but the top layer of praline was too cloyingly sweet.

I'm not so sure of the combination of praline and chestnuts now. It's like mixing chocolate with chestnuts. Weird?

Ice Cream Chefs
520 East Coast Road
#01-06, Ocean Park
6446 6355

Is this the only place that serves 'Kaya Lotee' as an ice cream flavour? Probably not, but it's my 1st time trying such an exotic flavour. There's the unmistakable fragrance of pandan leaves but I suppose it can get exceedingly sweet after the 1st few mouthfuls so it's not for me.

We shared a pint ($9.50) which can have a maximum of 3 flavours. I though the Cappuccino was as good as the one from Tom's Palette which was strong and had a bitter aftertaste. The Kiwi Berry Fuz wasn't too sweet and had the added bonus of being low fat. Rum The Raisins was alright but not the best I've had.

There wasn't a lot of flavours to choose from as compared to Tom's Palette. Personally, I still prefer Island Creamery the most!

The Patissier
#01-01, 4 Mohamed Sultan Road
6737 3369

This visit was totally unplanned. Halfway through the curtains shopping trip, we passed by this bakery which has been featured in the papers quite a few times. I've already known which cake I wanted (the mango meringue!) even before I stepped in. Sadly, it was already sold out and there were not many cakes left as it was closing time soon.

Trusting the words of the staff manning the counter, I picked Strawberry Cognac ($7) over Green Tea Bavarian. I was pleased that the taste of cognac and strawberry puree was distinct in the layers of sponge sandwiching smooth mascarpone mousse. This was great as an after lunch treat since it was very light.

Without doubt, I'll definitely be back since I want to try the mango meringue very very much!

Canele Patisserie Chocolaterie #2
#B1-81/82, Raffles City Shopping Centre
6334 7377

Friends wanted a great dessert place after that disappointing dinner and yours truly suggested Canele since it is around the area and the quality is always good for a sugar fix.

Recently, I'm smitten with all things chestnut (and sesame!) so Mont Blanc ($6.50++) satisfied my craving perfectly. The chestnut cream was fragrant yet not too sweet while the embedded candied chestnut was a nice surprise. I didn't even mind the almond tart which was used as the base instead of sponge cake. This would be near perfection if only there wasn't any chantilly cream!

The Tiramisu ($6.50++) was almost boring. This Italian classic failed to impress me as there wasn't any hint of marsala, rum or brandy.

I spotted this cake on other tables and wanted to try it too. Dark chocolate lovers would like the Caraibe ($8.50++). 66% dark chocolate cream and sponge cake is covered with a layer of hazelnut nougatine and almond chocolate glaze. This was fabulous at first but the law of diminishing returns quickly kicked in as this was a rather heavy dessert.

This is still one of my favourite places for desserts with its elegantly shaped cakes and pastries!

Ricciotti
20 Upper Circular Road
#B1-49 The Riverwalk
6533 9060

A walk after dinner brought us to this Italian deli for desserts. I'm proud to say that I've tried almost all (if not all) the desserts in their menu! Thanks to a half price promotion on cakes last year which sadly, is no longer available. All of them were pretty good except the tiramisu which is ironic, given that this is an Italian place.

On all my previous visits, I had forsake the colourful gelato in the display case for the mouth watering desserts on the menu. This time, I picked the Red Berries Yogurt ($4.50++ for a scoop) since I was looking for something tart and not too sweet. This homemade gelato fits the bill completely.

The Morbida ($7.80++) was chosen as the cake of honour for the birthday girl as I remember it was good the last time I had it. It's a chocolate mousse cake on a base of chocolate sponge. What makes this special is the ball of liquid dark chocolate in the middle which breaks apart and flows freely when it's cut into. Mop it up with the mousse and sponge and it's as good as it gets!

I can't remember whether I've tried the Limoncino ($7.80++) before as it didn't make any lasting impression. And rightly so after my 1st bite into this pie made of lemon custard and meringue. It was quite bland and lacked the fragrance of citrus. I'm definitely not a pie or tart person so this may explain my lack of enthusiasm towards this dessert.

Overall, Ricciotti doesn't disappoint with its wide variety or high quality of desserts. The drinks were also pretty good. Give this a shot if Canele or Bakerzin gets too crowded!
Happy 21st birthday, Yee Hweeeeeeee! =)

Patisserie Glace #2
#01-10 Chinatown Plaza
6400 0247

Don't ever say I don't learn from my mistakes. This time, I reserved the Mont Blanc ($5.60) in advance before making the trip down. Both my anticipation and expectation are high for this Japanese chestnut cake as it has been much raved about by the media. Well... It was nice. Just nice. Not great nor fabulous. I like the fragrant chestnut paste and the embedded whole chestnut. What didn't work for me was the white cream which I dislike. Shoot me, but I have to say that I like Rive's rendition more.

Even though I just had lunch, I couldn't resist the Chocolat de Noch ($5.10) as it looked good. And tasted good too! It was a contrast of texture with the crispy top of walnut and almond bits on a thin cookie base and the moist and soft sponge in between.

I've never been a fan of Strawberry Shortcake ($4.80) due to the amount of fresh cream. Just thinking of eating the cream makes me shudder. Nevertheless, I attempted a bite of this famous cake (after scrapping the cream away) and liked it well enough. The sponge was very light and fragrant with the mild sweetness of strawberries.

Service was very friendly and efficient even though there was a queue forming. I'm amazed that such a small bakery located in an out of the way place could gain so much fanfare! This just shows the wonder of good food. Or rather, good desserts!

PS. Cafe #3
#02-09A, Palais Renaissance
6887 2207

It's great news for sweet tooths like Na and I that there's an outlet of PS. Cafe in town! Not surprising, I like this cafe more for its decadent desserts than main courses as I find that the latter was too average for its high price tag.

Not wanting to overstuff myself with the huge Double Chocolate Blackout Cake, I voted for the Chocolate Crunch Doorstop Cake ($15.90++) served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Boy, this was very good! A sticky layer of gooey chocolate, caramel and generous amount of walnuts sat on moist and dark sponge, covered with a rich and smooth layer of chocolate mousse and big malt balls. Don't eat this if you are on a diet!

The Steamed Apple Toffee Pudding ($13.90++) was a special on the desserts board and I'm glad we chose it over the other cakes and tarts on the beautiful display cases. The chunks of Granny Smith are wonderfully sweet and tart at the same time while the pudding was suitably moist and soft. Served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, this is by far one of the best puddings I've had.

I really like the ambience and decor of both outlets of PS. Cafe. Plus, there's always cute waiters around! But be warned that there's a policy of minimum one order per diner which is not common, though not unheard of.

Patisserie Glace #1
34 Craig road
#01-10 Chinatown Plaza
6400 0247

Claiming to serve authentic Japanese pastry, this small bakery has been making a storm in the local desserts scene. Its popularity can be attested to by the rather long queue forming while we were there! Cakes were simply flying straight from the shelves into the eager hands of patrons.

The Bleuet ($4.50) was very good with layers of blueberry and yoghurt cream between soft and moist sponge cake. I polished it all by myself as it was such a light dessert to have after lunch!

We snapped up the last slice of Double Rare Cheese Mango ($4.70). This is a seasonal item as only fresh mangoes are used to make the puree. Those who know me well will not be surprised to see that I didn't take to the taste as I could still detect the cheesey taste.

Actually, I made the trip just to try its famed Mont-Blanc but it was already sold out in the morning! I was so disappointed when I heard that. But this also mean an excuse to go back to try its other cakes since I'm dead set on eating that Mont-Blanc!

Max Brenner Chocolate Bar
#01-06/08 Esplanade Mall
6235 9556

Dinner was such a light affair that I had to spoil it all by having desserts in this chocolate heaven.

The Venezuela Dark Chocolate ($5.90++) is made from Chiollo cocoa beans which supposedly have an extra aromatic flavour and hints of coffee. It didn't impress me much as it was not thick enough and quite normal like the usual hot chocolate we can make at home.

This was the star of the night to me! The Chocolate Souffle ($15++) was freshly baked to order and served with chocolate sauce, strawberries and vanilla ice cream. Oh my, this was just sin in every bite. The molten centre was extremely moist and the cake was fluffy and soft. As an afterthought, why is it that icing sugar is always sprinkled on top? I have to remember to ask for NO icing sugar in future.

The Truffle Mousse Cake ($12++) is also a sight to behold. Made of 70% cocoa solids chocolate, the mousse was silky smooth with a layer of soft sponge at the base. The presentation was also fabulous with the bright and juicy strawberries and apples as decoration pieces!

This was my 1st foray into the Crepe Suzette ($12++) territory since waffels and crepes are never my cup of dessert. This is a typical French dessert with a hot sauce of caramelized sugar, orange juice and peel. I liked the sauce more than the crepe even though the latter was paper thin. The former was not too creamy and cloying.

In retrospect, the name "Chocolate Souffle" is a bit of a misnomer since this was more a warm molten chocolate cake than a souffle. Nevertheless, regardless of the name, this was still one of the better ones I've eaten!

Queues were long and we had to wait for quite awhile for a table. Portions were large enough to be shared and still be satisified with the sugar rush.

AquaMarine #2

Na surprised me with a birthday cake at my workplace today! We missed out on this cake while having the buffet earlier this month and were sad over it. But not anymore since I get to try it now!

I like the chocolate truffle cake! It was moist, smooth, a little dense (in a good way) and not too sweet. There was a thick layer of cocoa powder sprinkled on top which may turn off some people but not me since I like the bitter taste.

Thanks, Na! Don't worry, I love you more than the cake!

B Bakery
15 Bussorah Street
6293 9010

Do note the address as this little cafe is very nondescript and you can easily miss it while wandering along the shophouses.

The Manjari Lemon Cream ($4.80) was awesome! The mild sweetness of the chocolate mousse complimented the tangy lemon cream. If you have a sweet tooth, do consider giving this a miss since the sourish lemon cream really stood out.

Tiramisu ($4.80) was a bit of a let-down as the sponge was a little dry and there was no distinct taste of marsala wine, only that of espresso coffee. I've definitely had better ones elsewhere.

The waiter recommended the Pear Tart ($4) too. I didn't like it as there was an overwhelming amount of pastry as the crust was quite thick and buttery. I know I know, those who like tarts go for buttery crust but not me. I'm just not a tart person. Period.
The cafe is absolutely bustling with diners during lunch time! This is definitely a hidden gem worth exploring more in future.

Mezza9
2F, Grand Hyatt
6416 7189

This is the 1st time I tried a Green Tea Opera ($5+) and it had all the ingredients I like: green tea, azuki beans and chocolate! Another point in its favor was that the sweetness was very mild and the bittersweet taste of green tea lingered in the mouth. The macaron was awful though. It was too sweet, tasted "flat" and the filling was almost non-existent.

The Mud Cake ($4.50+) was just normal and didn't impress us much. I think it would have been much better if there are layers of buttercream or fudge in the sponge cake.

Listen up! It's 50% off all sliced cakes after 9.30pm! I'll definitely go back to try its other cakes, especially when I'm feeling poor!

Swensen's #1
#03-05/06, Funan Digitalife Mall
6338 6355

I won a Chocolate Loving Indulgence cake ($45+) from a contest. This was just in time for the Mother's Day celebration dinner we had this weekend. Swensen's has always been famous for its ice cream cakes and I have fond childhood memories of dinners at Swensen's.

The ice cream for this cake was sticky chewy chocolate (my favourite flavour from Swensen's!) and sliced almonds gave a crunchy texture to the otherwise smooth ice cream. Even though this was only 1kg, it was enough to feed all 16 of us satisfactorily. Swensen's can always be trusted for its desserts, though I can't say the same for the main courses.

Rive Gauche #2
#B207-9-2, Ngee Ann City
6887 4579

After trying its great Mont Blanc and the signature Guanaja, this 2nd visit fell short of my expectations. By a long shot. Though refreshing, the Longan Almond Cake ($3.50) had very dry sponge at the base and lacked the distinct sweetness and fragrance of amaretto. The only saving grace was the smooth almond mousse which tasted very similar to an almond pudding.

The Pistachio Cherry ($4.20) came recommended as the Chef's Special. But it was anything but that. The layers of chocolate sponge were extremely dry while the pistachio and cherry mousse tasted bland. With a probe of my fork, the individual layers fell apart easily! Just goes to show how dry the whole thing is. The description read "The perfection of orchestrated flavours". Which is clearly not the case here.

I'm probably scarred for life by that Pistachio Cherry Cake! If not for its Mont Blanc, I don't reckon I'll be back anytime soon.

Deluxe by Bakerzin #3
#01-37, Wisma Atria

An unexpected stop was made at the "deluxe" version (can anyone tell me what is so "deluxe" about it? The selection of cakes is similar to that of other outlets!) of Bakerzin when I spotted something that made me stop in my tracks. Guess what was it?

The signature Chocolate Amer cake is half-priced in the month of May! Hooray!

Sis bought the size 5 cake ($12.50+) for the whole family to share. I loved it! Not too cloyingly sweet, the flourless chocolate sponge layered with bitter chocolate mousse was perfect as an after dinner dessert.

What are you waiting for? Go get it NOW! I'm off to eat the remaining slice sitting in the fridge now.

Purple Rose Confectionery cafe
Blk 42, Holland Drive #01-91
6775 9101

Located off the main road leading to Holland Village, this little cafe was a surprisingly pleasant find. Lured by the luscious cakes on display, I couldn't resist the temptation of further indulgence.

The simply named Chocolate Layer Cake ($9) would be a hit for chocolate lovers. 3 rich layers of chocolate cake are sandwiched between chocolate buttercream. What I liked about this was that the sponge was very moist and light. Now, I'm usually put off by buttercream of any sort but this surprised me with its silky smooth texture which complemented the cake very nicely.

There are many other droolworthy cakes such as shortcakes, brownies and fudge cakes that may be worth a try. This is a great place to chill out with friends if you want to avoid the crowds at Holland Village!

Ben and Jerry's #2
#B1-80, Raffles City Shopping Centre
6336 2143

It's B&J's annual Free Cone Day! This year, there were 5 flavours to choose from, albeit not too exciting ones like chocolate and vanilla. But hey, I can't complain since it's such a nice gesture from B&J's. When we got there, the queue was long (not surprising) but the wait was surprisingly short as we only queued for about 15 mins.

I chose the Chocolate Fudge Brownie since I haven't had it for such a long time. Still as good as ever with generous fudgey bits of brownie chunks. In fact, I think I had this on the Free Cone Day last year! Did I, Ms Noo?

The Coffee Coffee Buzzbuzzbuzz was the underdog as we didn't expect to be wowed by it. It turned out to be quite good as the coffee taste was strong enough but I still prefer the one from Tom's Palette anytime. The studded chocolate pieces were a little annoyingly too much and too large.

Chocolate Macadamia is the latest flavour rolled out by B&J. I found it to be too creamy and more like vanilla rather than chocolate. The only thing I like is the huge chocolate coated sweet macadamia. Oops, by the time this had its turn in front of the camera, the ice cream was melting!

Indeed, ice cream makes people happy!

Till next year!

WELCOME!

In ancient Greek mythology, sirens are creatures which have the body of a bird and the head of a woman. They have such sweet voices that sailors who heard their songs were lured into grounding their boats on the rocks on which the nymphs sang.

To me, food are like the sirens in so many ways. Intoxicating, wonderful, beautiful and yet, so very deadly if you let them get the better of you. Food is a big part of my life and it’s meant to be appreciated and savored slowly. I admit that I am extremely particular about what I eat. If it’s not something I want to put in my body, I’d rather not eat. Some people eat to live while others live to eat. I’ve yet to discover which side of the camp I’m in… What about you?

I hope that you will enjoy reading about my food adventures as much as I like writing them. And many thanks to my family and friends who always wait patiently for me to take photos before digging in!
